What's bringing you in?
STRESS | FEELING STUCK | ANXIETY | CHRONIC TENSION | DEPRESSION | TRAUMA | MINDFULNESS INSTRUCTION
I combine working with the body and emotions to explore what you are feeling in your body in a quiet, detailed, slow moving way. Together we make connections between how you think about things and how you feel them in your body. Sessions can involve guided visualizations, settling into the calm of mindfulness, and working to amplify and understand the support you have within yourself and in the world around you. By learning how to listen to signals in your body, you build the ability to respond rather than react, and to become more flexible and adaptive.
Sessions can also involve the exploration of challenging memories that have stuck with you and still show up in physical ways. These might feel like stuck spots or blocks that keep you from moving forward or showing up in life in the ways you would like to. We explore this tension by following your sensations and inner experience, allowing it to move through you and be fully expressed even if there aren't words to go with it. Our goal is to find release and ease, so your body can be what carries and empowers your lifestyle and interests, rather than a restriction or a barrier to something you'd like to do.
A typical session begins with a 5-10 minute check in, followed by guided somatic work. Concepts we can work with:
- Resource development
- Nervous system regulation
- Boundary exercises
- Orienting responses
- Grounding and centering
- Breathing
- Postural assessment
These concepts are all explained and experienced in sessions! It's okay if they sound unfamiliar, and it's okay if you've already read every book you can get your hands on. I will meet you at whatever place you are at and give you the choice of which tools you'd like to use.
Let's talk more about the somatic work.
I am here to sit with you with kindness and attention, to guide your process while listening deeply, and to observe patterns without judgment - helping you notice the subtle ways your body communicates. We identify where experiences and emotions are held in the body, and explore those areas with curiosity to see what comes when we stay with the sensations, allow time to slow down, and let them fully express what's stored there. Sessions can also involve work on the massage table to open up restricted areas.
I will always create a safe place, letting you set the pace and lead the way, while guiding you back to the body and back to the present moment. I honor the vulnerability of this type of work, which requires the examination of meaning and beliefs around areas of pain that are guarded and protected for good reason. We differentiate together between knowing a truth intellectually vs. feeling it embodied, and eventually we look for insight through deep understanding that also matches the physical messages in your body. Working with the body gives direct access to internal places that are hidden, dark, or stuck; and journeying to those places with someone who cares about and supports you is powerful.
Because my work stays focused on the body, I love working in conjunction with psychotherapists as part of a team. As I work with you to develop and expand regulation of your nervous system, you will be able to take that into sessions with a psychotherapist to do more analytical and cognitive work. Often doing the two together makes both more meaningful.
I completed a 10-week intensive program at Antioch University for Somatic Psychotherapy. The certificate was 150 CE hours and focused on body-oriented techniques for trauma therapy, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety. I completed Level One training with the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute in Los Angeles to continue integrating somatic techniques. This was an 80 hour program over 6 months informed by trauma therapy, attachment theories, psychoanalysis, and the latest research in neuroscience and PTSD.
Specific Training
-Level One Training at The Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute (2018-2019)
-Intensive Somatic Psychotherapy Certification at Antioch University (2017)
-Clinical Application of Compassion Series with NICABM (2019)
-Treating Trauma Series with NICABM (2019)
